Aberdeen Geological Society is an Unincorporated Association organised with the sole purpose of providing a forum for people with shared interest in geology and the geology of the region. It is a non profit organisation and relies wholly on the subscriptions and donations from members of the Society. We currently have no external sponsors.
We are fortunate to be able to use some facilities of Aberdeen University, however.
Consequently, in 2022/23 AGS was pleased to support two pairs of Aberdeen University forth year undergraduates in completing their final MSc dissertation mapping projects. Both groups carried out detailed geological mapping at their chosen field sites using traditional field techniques complemented by Virtual Outcrop data (digital drone-derived photogrammetry models). This integrated approach enabled high-resolution mapping of lithologies along the Highland Boundary Fault at Stonehaven and on the Portsoy coast. Both student pairs presented their findings to the AGS membership at the 2023 AGM.
Then in 2024 /25, Aberdeen Geological Society with the James Hutton Foundation provided financial support in the production and publication of “North-East Scotland Landscapes in Stone” by A McKirdy. Birlinn published the book in 2025.
We are currently providing some financial support to Forvie National Nature Reserve and to the Siccar Point Site Development Project being jointly managed by Scottish Geology Trust, James Hutton Institute and Edinburgh Geological Society. Additionally, we have also provided some financial support to “Girls in Geoscience” and “The Friends of Hugh Miller” charity.
