Event Details
This is a morning Field Excursion, led by Joe Armstrong, to explore the granite and Dalradian breccia rock formations at Souter Head near to Cove. This event will meet from 9:30 and commence no later than 10:00am (Low water is at 10:30 on the 19th) and should take between 3 and 4 hours.
The meeting point will be the car park area just less than 100m south of the bridge over the railway, which is the access point to the coastal path and Souter head. This car park (at NJ 9575 0197) is just beyond the nearby group of houses, Burnbanks Village.
The excursion site is less than 500m on a defined path from the access point. We will also view the cliffs and caves at “The Poor Man” which is another 500m further south on the coastal path. Please note that the Souter Head rock formations are fairly jumbled and rough. Good walking boots are essential and a walking pole is recommended. We aim to have an incident free excursion and respectfully remind all attendees to read the Pre-excursion Awareness Checklist, which you may find at the top of the Excursions Booklets table on our Field Guides Page.
If you wish to attend, please contact our Excursions Secretary, Rosemary Feilden, by Email (excursions@aberdeengeolsoc.org.uk).
